City Plans Public Marina at Rocketts Landing
Mayor L. Douglas Wilder has signed a permit application for the development of Richmond’s first public marina on the James River. The marina will be built at the Intermediate Terminal, located in the area known as “Rocketts Landing,” where a private development of townhouses and condominiums also is being constructed under the same name.
Once the permit is approved by state and federal authorities, a “ground and water breaking” ceremony will be held to kick off construction in 2008, with the target completion date set for the summer of 2009.
The marina would feature 73 public boat slips for a variety of watercraft, including dinner cruise ships from the Hampton Roads area. The project, estimated to cost up to $5 million, will promote tourism in Richmond and provide a major economic boost along the James River waterfront east of Downtown.
The Rocketts Landing residential development also is in the process of seeking regulatory approval for building its own private marina.
